Naked Call Calculator

Sell a call with nothing behind it. Keeps the premium if the stock stays below the strike; the loss above it is unlimited.

A naked call is a short call with no shares and no long call behind it. The premium is the most the position can make, and the loss above the breakeven is open-ended, because there is no limit to how far a stock can rise. Brokers require margin and a permission level for this position, and that is the reason.

When it is used

Naked calls are sold when a trader expects a stock to stall or fall and wants to collect premium without buying protection. They are most common on indexes and on stocks a trader believes are capped near-term. Most traders prefer the Bear Call Credit Spread, which buys a higher call to cap the loss for a small part of the premium, and the grid makes the difference between the two easy to see.

How it makes and loses money

Time decay and falling implied volatility are the sources of profit. A rally hurts, and a rally with a volatility spike hurts before the stock has even reached the strike. Takeover announcements and earnings gaps are the specific risks: the stock can open far above the strike with no chance to adjust.

What to check in the grid

Look at the top rows. Unlike every other position in this list, the loss keeps growing without a floor, and the summary reports the risk as unbounded. Then look at the early columns near the strike to see how much a move costs weeks before expiry, while the call still has time value.
